Support Coordination
Help understanding and using your NDIS plan.
What this category covers
A Support Coordinator (sometimes called an SC) helps you understand your NDIS plan, find suitable providers, build your team, navigate crises, and get ready for plan reviews. They don't deliver hands-on support - they help you coordinate the supports you choose.
There are three levels: Support Connection (lowest intensity), Coordination of Supports, and Specialist Support Coordination (highest intensity, for complex situations). Your plan specifies which level is funded.
Plan management
Funded under Capacity Building - Support Coordination. The category is plan-fund-independent: most participants can choose registered or unregistered SCs, although the NDIA encourages registered coordinators.
Typical services
- Building a team of providers
- Negotiating service agreements
- Connecting with mainstream and community supports
- Crisis assistance
- Plan review preparation

Frequently asked
▸Is a Support Coordinator the same as a Local Area Coordinator (LAC)?
No. LACs work for partner organisations under the NDIA. Support Coordinators are funded through your plan and are an independent service.
▸Can OpenWay coordinators send enquiries on a participant's behalf?
Yes. OpenWay has a dedicated coordinator workspace with privacy snapshots, dual-sided messaging, and shareable shortlists.
Related supports
OpenWay is not part of the NDIS, NDIA or NDIS Commission. Final scope, pricing, travel, cancellation rules and non-face-to-face charges must be confirmed in a written service agreement between the participant (or their authorised support person) and the provider.
